In-Numri tal-Baħar is an exhibition that explores a series of poems on the theme of the sea through the lens of quantitative analysis. This type of analysis, the fruit of scientific and mathematical research, is used to look at 20 poems by Anton Buttigieg and Elizabeth Grech from an unusual angle.

While both poets explore the theme of the sea, Buttigieg and Grech have vastly different styles and lived/live in immensely different contexts. The quantitative analysis brings out both what unites these poets and what makes each poet’s individual style so distinctive. In the exhibition, the results are brought to life through data visualisation, which helps us begin to understand what the numbers are telling us. The analysis and visualisation are not the final step. The intention is to spark reflection and curiosity, so that readers explore the poems in greater detail and lose themselves in a world of emotions, colours and stories.
